Abstract
985,037. Cutting machines. PERCY SHEARD Ltd. May 21, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 6614/61. Heading B4B. A machine for cutting sheet material transversely comprises a frame which a cutter head is adapted to traverse in both directions, the cutter head having two pairs of rotatable cutters, one pair at each end, and drive means for the cutters which is adapted to advance the advance pair of cutters in an operative direction for either direction of traverse of the cutter head. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a cutter head comprises two pairs of rotatable cutters 112, 114, 116 and 118 and has connected to the ends thereof a chain 184 which passes around a pulley 196 driven by an electric motor 200. Sprocket wheels 178, 206, 144 and 210 are mounted on the shafts of the cutters and chains 202, 204 secured at their ends to endplates 96, 98 of a frame 90 pass respectively around sprocket wheels 178, 120 and 206 and 144, 120 and 210 so that as the cutter head is traversed in either direction, the cutters are rotated. The chains and sprocket wheels for rotating the cutters may be replaced by racks and pinions. Each upper cutter, e.g. 112, Fig. 4, is dished and relatively thin so as to be resiliently urged towards the lower cutter, e.g. 114. The cutter 112 is mounted on a carrier 156 which is axially adjustable on shaft 152. The control gear for the motor 200 includes a timer adapted to operate the motor after a predetermined length of material has been fed and is further arranged to reverse the direction of the motor at each operation. Limit switches near each end of the upper part 92 of the frame 90 are operated by the passage of the cutter head to stop the motor and bring the head to rest at the end of the frame. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the cutter head is advanced by means of chains, each secured at its ends to the end plates of the frame and passing around a drive sprocket as well as around sprocket wheels on the cutter shafts, the drive sprockets being driven in unison from a reversible electric motor.
