Abstract

[Also in Divisions B6 and G3] In a web fed carton-blank forming apparatus, the web W is fed by a pair of constantly rotating metering rollers F, FU, through a shiftable brake bar BB, BBU, and between a pair of intermittent feed rollers IF, IFU, Fig. 1, to the press P. A cam-shaft 35 driven continuously by direct gearing from the press P has a cam 38 for operating the brake bar and a pair of cams 44 for moving one of the intermittent feed rollers IF away from the other. The camshaft also drives through gearing, including a primary differential PD,- Fig. 2, one of the metering rollers F which in turn drives through gearing one of the intermittent feed rollers IFU. The web is fed continuously by the metering rollers F, FU and forms a loop L every time the brake bar BB clamps the web and the intermittent roller IF is lifted away from the driven roller IFU, when the press P is operated. Fig. 3 and 4 (not shown), illustrate the cam follower mechanism of the brake bar BB, and Fig. 5 and 6 (not shown), illustrate the cam follower mechanism of the feed roller IF. A selector switch S coupled directly to the cam-shaft 35, gives a signal in timed relation to the operation of the press P. This signal is compared with a signal from a photo-electric eye E scanning the web W for a registration mark, and the comparison is used to control two correction motors 53 and 97. Motor 53 drives via a chain 54 the casing of a secondary differential SD, and motor 97 drives via a chain 98a a known type of variator V. The combined outputs of the two motors are used to control the longitudinal register of the web W. The motor 97 corrects the variator ratio to continuously trim the error. In the press P, a platen 11 is fixed while a platen 13 is reciprocated along uprights 12 by a pair of connecting rods 21. Either platen may carry cutting and creasing dies while the other carries a base plate, these parts being referred to by reference numerals 14 and 15.
