A leno selvedge shedding device consists of bars 1, 2 carried by oppositely-moving heald frames, and needles 3, 4 pivoted at 13 on guides 5, 6 which surround the bars 1, 2. The needles have bifurcated tails 44, 45 co-operating with inclined notches 46, 47 in the bars. Fig. 2 shows the closed shed position, the selvedge warp thread 36, which passes over every pick of weft, being momentarily lower than the thread 38, which passes under every pick; these threads both lie behind the bar 1 as seen on Fig. 2, and both pass between the bars to lie in front of the bar 2. As the bar 1 is lifted and the bar 2 lowered from the position shown, the needle 3 is carried down by the notch 47 of the bar 2, and is tilted clockwise by its tail 44 riding out of the notch 46 of the bar 1; simultaneoulsy, the needle 4 is lifted and also tilted clockwise by the notches at the bottom of the bars. The eye 35 of the needle 3 is then touching the bar 1 and is therefore in front of the thread 36 as viewed on Fig. 2; the eye 37 of the needle 4 is against the bar 2 and behind the thread 38. Consequently, as the shed opens, the threads 36, 38 are given a leno twist; the tilting of the needles enables them to pass each other until they lie side-by-side when the shed is fully open. On the next pick, the bar 1 descends and the bar 2 rises, whereby as they pass through the position shown in Fig. 2, the needles are rocked anti-clockwise and the threads 36, 38 become twisted in the opposite direction.
