Abstract
984,454. Photo-electric turbidometer; turbidometers. C.C.HACH. Aug. 28, 1961, No. 30965/61. Headings G1A and G1X. A turbidometer for measuring the turbidity of a continuously flowing liquid 23, comprises a container 22 having inlet and outlet parts 25 and 24, respectively for maintaining a constant head of liquid and a light source 30 and lens 32 directing a diverging beam of light 35 vertically downwards through the upper surface of the liquid to be reflected by the particles 48 suspended in the liquid and detected by a plurality of series connected selenium photo-cells including 43 x 46 as shown to give an output on galvanometer G indicative of the turbidity of the fluid, annular disc 55 preventing radiation reflected from the surface of the liquid reaching the photo-cells. The photo-cells may be placed as shown for liquids of high turbidity, or may be arranged around a transparent section of the cylindrical container wall, Figs.4, 5 (not shown) for liquids of low turbidity to detect light radiation orthogonally reflected by the suspended particles from an incident collimated light beam. The galvanometer, shunted by a variable resistance may be calibrated by the use of clear distilled water and a metal rod of known reflectivity.
