Abstract

983,935. Automatic volume control. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. Oct. 25, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39166/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading H4R. In a submarine repeater, the feedback path of the amplifier consists of a network which simulates the attenuation of a section of the cable and its variation with temperature and frequency. A length of cable has its attenuation proportional to the square root of the frequency and its temperature coefficient of attenuation half of the temperature coefficient of resistance of the metal of which it is made. A ladder network of series resistors and shunt capacitors also has these characteristics and if this network is included in the feedback path of a repeater amplifier it will compensate for the changes in attenuation of the cable due to variations in frequency and sea temperature. The construction of a repeater is described in which the valves are surrounded by heat conducting members connected to a heat sink held in contact with the repeater housing, while the feedback network is enclosed in a copper box connected to a second heat sink also held in contact with the repeater housing so that the network is kept at sea temperature. The resistors of the network are wire-wound components preferably made of platinum.
