Abstract

983,195. Cable joints; two-part couplings. NORTHWEST INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 11, 1963 [May 31, 1962], No. 9626/63. Addition to 889,080. Heading H2E. A methed of insulating an electrical connection as described in the parent Specification, wherein the insulating member comprises a perforated flexible diaphragm 11 disposed between two perforated discs of inert dimensionally stable material 10, 13. In assembling a female connector, sockets 12 with insulating cables soldered to them are passed through bosses 16 of diaphragm 11, holes in discs 10, 13, and through a flexible ring or grommet 14 having an annular locking flange 18. This assembly is then placed in a mould into which is injected hot molten synthetic thermoplastic material which is the same as the material of the cable insulation and the flexible ring 14 and thus forms a homogeneous insulating mass or casing 33 which extends into the open end of a metal shell 21 and causes a tighter pressure seal against a metal spring clip 27 which is placed over an 0-ring 24. The casing 33 presses against the left-hand face of perforate disc 13 urging it towards disc 10 and since disc 10 abuts flange 23 the discs 10 and 13 compress flexible diaphragm 11 which thus fills any voids or cavities between the discs. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate two ways of assembling mating male and female connectors, that is, using a coupling nut or a moulded coupling. Specification 955,216 also is referred to.
