983,033. Lathes. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 11, 1963 [June 15, 1962], No. 23193/63. Headings B3B and B3T. A remotely controlled copying lathe for machining radio-active material &c. (not shown) comprises a carriage moved hydraulically along guide-tubes 9 and disposed behind the spindle 2, copying apparatus 4 on the carriage, and a template 15 on a support 16 rotatable about a horizontal axis to set the depth of cut at each pass or to produce a perpendicular shoulder on the work. The hydraulic copying apparatus 4 is angularly adjustable on the carriage 5 and carries a tracer 14 at the top and an adjustable tool-head 12 with a tool 12<SP>1</SP> above the work. Rotation of the support 16, which normally remains stationary during a copying-pass, is through a reduction gear (not shown) or a manual control 17. A dial 19 indicates the position of the template 15. A variable-speed drive for the spindle includes an electromotor 6<SP>1</SP>, a gear-box 6<SP>2</SP> with a speed-indicator 8, a conical coupling and an electromagnetic clutch 7. Flexible bellows 22 cover the tubes 9, and stops 11 limit movement of the carriage. A lever 13 may control advance of the copying apparatus 4 to bring the tracer 14 up to the template 15. Position of the carriage may be given by a pointer 5<SP>1</SP> and a scale 1<SP>2</SP>, or by a comparator 18.Coolant supplied through a conduit 21 is collected by a trough 20<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>2</SP> having a filter leading to a pump. Controls are connected to the lathe at 24.
