A method of spool setting comprises selecting from previously wound elemental bobbins a bobbin wound with a thread of a colour corresponding to a square in a line of the pattern and automatically assembling a plurality of so selected bobbins in the same colour sequence as that of the line of the pattern. The selection may be performed manually, mechanically, electrically or electronically e.g. by depressing the buttons of a keyboard, by a punched card, magnetic tape or a light-sensitive device. In Fig. 2 a manually operated keyboard causes a table 30 to rotate and drop bobbins in the required sequence into a trough 36 which passes them to a trough 37 where a shaft is caused to pass through them to form a tuft yarn spool. In Figs. 3 and 5 forty eight winding stations, each for a different colour, wind yarn on to bobbins which are doffed on to spindles 68-71 on a rotatable table. When a bobbin is selected it falls on to a conveyer 60 which transports it to a shoot 74 where it is dropped on to a spindle 75 to form a tuft yarn spool. When a spindle 68-71, of a station 1-48 is exhausted the table rotates to bring a full spindle over the dropping station and the winding machine winds more bobbins and doffs them on to the empty spindle. The bobbins may be of wood, metal, natural or synthetic resin or the bobbin may consist of the wound yarn itself. The conveyer is moved intermittently so that it is stationary when a bobbin falls on to it.
