Abstract

A crystalline olefin polymer is stabilized with a composition comprising (i) an aliphatic thioester, (ii) a polyphenol, (iii) an hydroxybenzotriazole, (iv) a nickel phenate of an alkylphenol monosulphide, and optionally (v) a metal soap. The olefin may be propylene, butene, pentene, hexene, 4-methylpentene-1, octene or styrene, and the preferred stabilizers are:-(i) didodecoyl or octadecoyl thiodiglycolate, or lauryl thiodipropionate, (ii) 4,41-thiobis-6-t-Bu-m-cresol, a condensation product of an aldehyde or ketone with an alkylphenol (e.g. formaldehyde and nonylphenol), or a tris-hydroxyarylpropane, (iii) 21 - hydroxy - 31 - t - Bu - 51 - Me - phenyl - 5-chlorobenzotriazole, (iv) a nickel phenate of bis - 2 - t - Bu - phenol monosulphide, and (v) Ca, Zn or Al stearate or laurate. In examples TiO2 also is present. The products find application as film and fibre, preferably stretched and dimensionally stabilized. Specifications 571,943, 960,012 and 982,473 are referred to.
