Abstract

982,348. Heat exchanger tubes. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Jan. 21. 1963 [Jan. 26, 1962], No.2533/63. Heading F4S. [Also in Division G6] A tubular heat-exchange element includes helicoidal fins of constant height set perpendicularly on the external wall thereof and arranged parallel to each other in an even number of identical sectors around the element, the fins being inclined in opposite directions in adjacent sectors to form a herring-bone pattern and the sectors having a concave section directed towards the exterior of the element. In Fig. 1, the tubular element 1 includes six identical sectors 3a, 3b, 3c, ... &c., each sector being delimited by two generator lines 4 parallel with the element axis and comprising a series of helicoidal fins 5 mounted on a concave floor, the axis of the said fins lying outside the perimeter of, and parallel to, the axis of the element. The concavity of the sector must be increased with the number of sectors or series of fins for a given element. The fins in adjacent sectors are inclined in opposite directions whilst their angles of inclination to the axis of the element may be within the limits of 10 to 70 degrees with an optimum between 15 and 45 degrees. The central portion 2 is reserved for the primary fluid of a heat-exchanger tube, or a slug of fissile material in the case of a nuclear fuel can, and in the latter case the number of series of fins depends on the can diameter. The fins may be rectangular or trapezoidal, and may be machined at their extremities to form notched portions 7 of substantially triangular or dovetailed shapes. The extremities may also be deflected slightly causing a changed angle of inclination. Lateral extensions with hollowedout portions may be formed in one piece with the element on certain generator lines to effect the centring of the element in its container.
