[Also in Division G4] Apparatus for controlling the passage of persons, at, for example, a railway station, comprises a barrier 16 adapted to extend across and move along a gangway, a first latch 28 to stop and hold the barrier at a first position a second latch 29 to stop and hold the barrier at a second position and a mechanism which releases the first latch immediately upon insertion into a receptacle 36 of a coin, token or ticket having a minimum of required characteristics, after which the coin, token or ticket is presented to testing means and the release of the second latch from its operable position is effected only if the coin, token or ticket possesses characteristics in addition to the minimum. The arrangement avoids waiting while the testing operation is being carried out. Upon release of the first latch 28, the barrier is free to be pushed along the gangway on a rail 14. Should the coin, token or ticket prove not to posses the additional characteristics the barrier is stopped by the second latch 29 and the door 37 in a return passage automatically opened; closure of this door releases the latch and the barrieris able to return on a continuously-driven conveyer band 24 to the entrance, where it lines up behind other barriers adjacent an electromagnet 31 in readiness to move to the starting position at the latch 28. As each barrier moves into the gangway, the arms 17, 19 are raised by a roller 21, Fig. 4, acting against a track 22. The magnet 31 is only energized to retract a band-engaging member 26 which is provided on the barrier when the preceding barrier completes the electrical circuit across conductorrails 33 adjacent the starting position. Each barrier carries a projecting rod 35 on its trailing face for actuating a mechanism on the following barrier to disengage it from the conveyer; disengagement of each barrier is also effected by a guide rail disposed between the two latch positions.
