[Also in Division E2] A barrier device to control the passage of persons or objects comprises a barrier 8 which is normally withdrawn and only actuated into an obstructing position if an attempt to pass through is made without the previous insertion of a coin or ticket. In the device shown, a person passing through interrupts in turn three light beams which emanate from lamps 15, 16, 17 housed beneath a rail 6 and normally impinge on their associated photo-electric cells 9, 10, 11 each cell being connected to its respective amplifier 18, 19, 20 and relay 21, 22, 23. When a coin is inserted in a slot 3, it closes a switch 30 to illuminate a green lamp 4, move a deflector 31 for directing subsequently inserted coins down a return shoot 13 and open the circuit associated with the second beam. On passing through the device, only the interruption of the third beam on the cell 11 has any effect and results in extinguishing the lamp 4 and the withdrawal of both the deflector 31 and a slider 35, the latter allowing the coin to fall into a tray 38. If a coin is not inserted, interruption of the second beam on the cell 10 results in illumination of a red lamp 42 and an instruction sign and operates a motor 24 which drives the barrier 8 to a position 8a through a slipping clutch 25; a limit switch 29 stops the motor. On returning to the entrance to the device to insert a coin, the beam on the first cell 9 is interrupted and results in extinguishing the lamp 42 and operating the motor 24 to withdraw the barrier; a limit switch 28 stops the motor. Defective coins are recovered by a pushbutton 14.
