Abstract

982,130. Shunting resistances for safety devices. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. Jan. 3, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 341/64. Heading H1S. A shunting resistance for a safety device comprises a thin plate 60 made of electrically conductive material bearing on each face a conductive electrode 70, 80 in strip form, joining by its ends a pair of terminals 71-72, 81-82, the resistivity of the plate being higher than that of the electrodes. The electrodes 70, 80 may take the form of thin adherent metal strips and be deposited by painting, spraying, atomization or electrolytic deposition either in zig-zag fashion (Fig. 3) or in the form of a spiral (Fig. 4). As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the terminals 71, 81 are connected by conductors 4A, 5A to a voltage supply and the terminals 72, 82 by conductors 4B, 5B to the energizing coil 1 of a safety relay. A current which effects the shunting of the coil 1 passes between the electrodes 70, 80 through the resistive material, e.g. carbon, of the plate 60. Owing to the arrangement of the 4-terminal circuit, the relay always fails safe in the event of accidental breakage of any one of the conductors 4A, 5A, 4B, 5B or of the coil 1 itself, or of either of the electrodes 70, 80 (Fig. 3), because the current through the coil 1 is interrupted in each of these cases. Any shortcircuit between the electrodes or between the terminals, for example, due to perforation of the plate 60 or to leakage across its surface, also causes the relay to fail safe.
