Abstract
981,735. Shift registers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Dec. 23, 1960], No. 44297/60. Heading G4C. [Also in Divisions H1 and H3] Intelligence storage apparatus comprises a semi-conductor strip containing a plurality of junctions with a negative resistance characteristic, a conducting body adjacent the strip to provide a network interconnecting some of the junctions, a strip conductor over the surface of the body to provide connections to the body at points opposite junctions and a strip conductor in contact with the opposite surface of the semi-conductor strip. Figs. 1 and 2 show a semi-conductor strip 10 on a backing plate 11. A plurality of tunnel junctions are provided in layer 10 by alloying of diffusing metal beads 13 and a strip 14 of resistive material is provided to contact each of the beads 13, with a thin neck portion between adjacent junctions which constitutes a resistance. Opposite each junction is an ohmic electrode 16 which contacts one of three strip conductors 17. Insulating material 18, 19, fills up the spaces between electrodes 16 and beads 13. The resistive portions are arranged to constitute resistors 21, 22 and 23 in the equivalent circuit shown in Fig. 3 which consists of a register for binary intelligence. Each stage has two stable positions. Three register stages are provided by the three input conductors 17 to ensure uni-directional transfer of intelligence through the resistor without losses; if conductors 17 are sequentially fed with a series of voltage pulses, each first overlapping the preceding pulse, intelligence passes continually down the register and the output may be fed back to the input to provide continuous circulation. Alternatively if potentials are maintained on any of the conductors 17 the arrangement may provide quasi permanent storage.
