981,188. Axial-flow fans. SOC. LYONNAISE DE VENTILATION INDUSTRIELLE SOLYVENT. Dec. 15, 1961 [Dec. 19, 1960], No. 45093/61. Heading F1C. In an axial-flow fan comprising at least two blades mounted on a hub and the tips of which move in the immediate vicinity of a stationary outer casing, the maximum thickness of the transverse section of each blade taken on a cylinder coaxial with the impeller increases from the root of the blade to the tip. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 show cross-sections of a rotor blade of the fan shown in Fig. 3, taken on cylinders IV-IV, V-V and VI-VI respectively. As shown, the maximum thickness of the blade increases from a value LVI near the root to a value LIV near the tip. The maximum thickness is measured in a direction at right angles to the axis of rotation and is located at a distance from the leading edge of the blade equal to between “ and ¢ the chord length. The chord length may increase from root to tip. Instead of being cylindrical, the outer casing 10 or the impeller hub 11, or both, may be conical to accelerate the flow from inlet to outlet. Preferably, the ratio of the sum of the maximum thicknesses of all the blades to the circumference of the cylinder on which the blade cross-section under consideration is taken is greater than or equal to 0À08, at least for one cross-section. In the case of a fan having a cylindrical outer casing, the ratio preferably increases from root to tip, and reaches a value equal to or greater than 0À08 at the tip. The effect of all these measures is to reduce breakaway of flow from the impeller blades and to make the pressure more uniform from the hub to the outer periphery, thereby improving performance and reducing noise.
