981,151. Making ball or roller bearings; bending cutters. AIR FRANCE. Feb. 10, 1961 [July 16, 1960], No. 5096/61. Headings B3A, B3E, B3V and B3W. A tool for use in crimping the cylindrical sleeve 3 for holding the outer race 2 of a roller or ball bearing in a housing 1 comprises an arbor 11 adapted for coaxial movement relative to the bearing and carrying two punches 18, 19 for effecting a first crimping pass, said punches being concentric with each other and each having its circular leading edge 21 castellated to present teeth 22, the teeth of the different punches being bevelled in opposite directions in such manner as to cut the adjacent edge of the cylindrical race in tongues and bend the tongues through approximately 45 degrees alternatively towards and away from the common axis. A second crimping pass is effected by a tool comprising an arbor carrying a flat-faced punch 27 provided with a peripheral rim 28 which restricts the bending of the tongues. The punch flattens the partly bent tongues against the bearing outer race and the housing to complete the assembly. The first criming pass may be effected simultaneously at both ends of the sleeve, Fig. 1, as also can the second crimping pass, Fig. 5. Alternatively, the holding sleeve 3 is held between a mandrel 23 and a guide ring 24 seated on a base 25, Fig. 2, during the first crimping pass. The sleeve thus prepared is stocked for future use or fitted in its bearing to await the second crimping pass. In another embodiment the punches 18 and 19 are arranged on one side of the bearing and the flat-faced punch on the other side, Fig. 4. Specification 973,571 is referred to.
