Abstract
Chewing compositions and snuff compositions are rendered low in nicotine content by substituting all or part of the tobacco by papaya leaves. Conventional processes of the tobacco industry are used in preparing, twists, plugs for chewing and snuff for inhaling the papaya leaves being processed in accordance with tobacco-leaf processing techniques. For chewing compositions the vegetable fibre content is at least 40% of the finished composition, 70% of the fibrous material being derived from papaya leaves or papaya leaves and tobacco leaves (i.e. 28% of the finished composition). For snuff compositions the total amount of fibrous material is at least 70% there being 49% of fibrous material derived from papaya leaves or papaya leaves and tobacco leaves (all dried, cured and fermented) in the finished composition. The balance of the fibrous material may be derived from coltsfoot leaves, beet leaves, maple leaves, eucalyptus leaves &c. (many other examples given). The fibrous material is mixed with a casing material which contains flavouring ingredients, emulsifying, conditioning and binding agents (many examples given). Between 0.01 and 2.5% niacin or rutin may also be included in the compositions, and a desirable amount of moisture is also included.
