A method of producing a polystyrene article comprises the steps of positioning a sheet of extruded polystyrene veneer within a die cavity, introducing steam under pressure into said cavity thereby causing said veneer to expand so as to fill said cavity, and removing the shaped article from said cavity. The invention is described with respect to the production of tiles having smooth surfaces of which the upper one may be ornamented or embossed.
