Abstract

980,256. Capacitors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. May 16, 1961 [May 17, 1960], No. 17368/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1M. An electrolytic capacitor comprises aluminium anode and cathode plates which may be rolled together with a fibrous intermediate foil for immersion in a high-conductivity electrolyte composed of an aqueous solution of one or more chemically weak acids, e.g. acetic or citric acid, the anode and, if required, the cathode, being chemically or electrochemically polished to a mirror finish and electrolytically formed with an oxide film without formation of an atmospherically produced oxide film. The plates may be polished by treating with a mixture of 70% phosphoric acid, 10% nitric acid and 20% sulphuric acid all concentrated; or with a mixture of 25% acetic anhydride and 75% concentrated perchloric acid at 60-85‹ C.; or with a hot mixture of 70% orthophosphoric acid, 25% sulphuric acid and 5% nitric acid all concentrated at 100-110‹C.; or with a mixture of 7-19% ammonium bifluoride 8-18% of concentrated nitric acid, 1-5% dextrine, and water to 100% at 70‹ C. Alternatively the plates may be polished by D.C. electrolysis in a mixture of perchloric acid and acetic anhydride, sodium carbonate and trisodium phosphate; or sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and orthophosphoric acid all concentrated with stainless steel cathode. Two plates may be polished simultaneously by A.C. electrolysis between the plates in an electrolyte as above. Foil plates may be continuously polished and electrolytically oxidized without formation of atmospheric oxide by drawing a length of foil through the polishing bath and the electrolytic oxidation bath in a submerged condition throughout the process. Specification 901,793 is referred to.
