Abstract

An ion-exchange composition comprises an ion-exchange material occluded in a uniformly hydrophilic non-ionizable water-insoluble gel, the matrix of which may be formed by (a) cross-linking polyacrylamide or polymethacrylamide with for example glyoxal, epichlorohydrin or diglycidyl ether, (b) reaction of polyacrylic acid in aqueous medium with chromic salts, or (c) polymerizing one or more water-soluble vinyl monomers, e.g. acrylamide, in aqueous solution in the presence of a water-soluble cross-linking agent, for example methylenebisacrylamide. The ion-exchange materials may be sulphonated polystyrene. In examples, an aqueous mixture of acrylamide methylenebisacrylamide and sodium polyvinyltoluene sulphonate is polymerized to a gel using dimethylaminoproprionitrile and ammonium persulphate as a catalyst, and this may be mixed with the sodium salt of a partially sulphonated copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene; a gel is formed of gelatin and sodium polyvinyltoluene sulphonate or polyethylenimine. Ion-exchange diaphragms may be prepared by coating or impregnating a support, for example paper, regenerated cellulose, cloth, asbestos, nylon, netting or metal screening with a polymerizable material containing the ion-exchange material and placing the treated support between plates till gel formation is substantially complete. Specification 910,202 is referred to.ALSO:Ion-exchange diaphragms comprise a support, for example paper, regenerated cellulose, cloth, asbestos, nylon, netting or metal screening, coated with a composition comprising a uniformly hydrophilic non-ionizable water-insoluble gel having ion-exchange material occluded therein. Such diaphragms are prepared by coating the support with a material polymerizable to the gel matrix and containing the ion-exchange material, and placing the coated support between plates until gel formation is substantially complete. Gel matrices specified are agar-agar, gelatin, regenerated cellulose, and various cross-linked polymers. Ion-exchange materials specified are natural and synthetic zeolites and synthetic ion-exchange resins. Specification 910,202 is referred to.ALSO:Ion exchange diaphragms containing a uniformly hydrophilic non-ionisable water-insoluble gel having ion-exchange material included therein are prepared by coating or impregnating a support, e.g. paper, cloth, asbestos, nylon or netting, with a polymerizable material containing the ion-exchange material and placing the coater or impregnated support between plates until gel formation is substantially completed.
