Abstract
979,943. Moulding canoes; laminates. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Nov. 2, 1962 [Nov. 9, 1961], No. 41627/62. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division B7] In a method for fabricating a composite formable sheet having a curved surface there is provided a rigid cellular sheet 12 having adjacent a major surface thereof a layer of mesh 14 and an adhering layer of resin 16 having a " gel stage " in its curing cycle, the coated sheet then being formed into a curved shape having the mesh 14 lying on a convex surface. The rigid cellular sheet 12 may be an expanded polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride foam or a composite board of wood chips, or fine-celled blast furnace slags. The layer of mesh 14 may be expanded metal or plastic, or a fabric, and may be in the configuration of a hexagonal honeycomb. The resin 16 employed may be phenol formaldehyde, epoxy, polyester, or rigid polyurethane resins. A canoe is described which was constructed by forming a sheet of expanded polystyrene to an outline shown in Fig. 4. A sheet of expanded metal mesh was cut to match the outline of the foam plastic blank and was applied to one surface of the same. A coating of a phenol formaldehyde resin having a gel stage of 12 hours at 24‹ C. was applied to the surface of the foam plastic sheet over the mesh, and was permitted to harden until the gel stage was reached. The sheet, with the expanded metal lath covered side outermost was then placed upon, and slowly forced to conform to, a frame having the outline of a canoe. The finally formed canoe was then held at a temperature of about 24‹ C. for 16 hours to complete the curing of the resin.
