Abstract

979,840. Lathes. E. C. HAHN, [trading as INDEX-WERKE KOMM. GES. HAHN & TESSKY]. Nov. 30, 1962 [Nov. 30, 1961], No. 45503/62. Headings B3B and B3T. [Also in Division B8] An automatic single spindle lathe comprises chucking mechanism to pick up a workpiece and move it forwardly within a headstock and two switches, one, 198, (at the rear of the headstock) actuated to stop the machining as the mechanism is retracted and the other, 196, Fig. 2 (at the front of the headstock) actuated to restart the machining as the mechanism is advanced. The chuck 30 is operated by a collet sleeve 32, a lever 34 and a cam 36 controlled by a rapid action clutch 60. The spindle-22 is rotated by a motor 24 which also rotates a shaft 42 connected by an electric clutch 44 to a shaft 46 providing drive for indexing the turret &c. and for rotating a shaft 50 driving cams for feeding slides 38, 40 and a cam drum 52 carrying dogs 54 for actuating switches for gear-shifting &c. and for controlling a lever 58. When the lever 58 is struck by a dog 54, the member 70 of the clutch 60 is engaged to rotate the collet-operating cam 36 by 180 degrees to unclamp the workpiece; as the clutch continues to rotate, a cam surface 78 on a part of the clutch member 70 withdraws the clutch to a non-driving position where a catch 76 is engaged. In operation, a push-button is depressed to actuate a valve 136 to cause a rod 160 to be advanced by fluidpressure in a cylinder 150 and feed a workpiece 94, Fig. 3, from a double-armed segmental member 104, through the lathe spindle and up to a stop 190 on the turret 18. The stop 190 moves to actuate a switch 196 which energizes the clutch 44 and causes the drum 52 to rotate, thus actuating the clutch 60 and closing the collet through the lever 34. Movement of the lever 34 actuates the switch 198 to cut off pressure from the work-feed rod 160. When machining is complete, a further cam on the drum 52 actuates the clutch 30, causing release of the switch 198 and withdrawal of the rod 160 which, by means of a gripper head 160 carries the work with it. When the head 166 abuts the end of the cylinder 150 the work is released; at the same time, the end of the rod 168 abuts a switch 174 and actuates a valve 138 not only to move a piston 116, Fig. 3, upwardly to pivot the member 104 and deposit the workpiece into a bin 200, but also to allow a piston 120 to move downwardly. Movement of the member 104 actuates a switch causing the member 104 to be moved back to the position shown in Fig. 5 to receive a new workpiece. A timer then operates and, subsequently, the valve 138 is actuated to move the new workpiece to the starting position of Fig. 3. In a modification, bar stock 28, Fig. 2, is supplied. When the head 158 of the piston 160 engages a switch 210, the stock remaining in the spindle is withdrawn as scrap and a new bar is supplied. In a further modification, work is released from the magazine 90, 92, Fig. 3, by magnetically-controlled grippers.
