Abstract

979,502. Crimping pliers. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. May 24, 1961 [May 25, 1960], No. 18405/60. Heading B4W. [Also in Division B3] A crimping tool for making electrical connections by deforming a sleeve over wire connectors comprises three or more die members 1, 2, 3, 4 which are arranged to form by their sides a a continuous profile and are movable relatively to each other so that the dimensions of the profile are reduced without substantial alteration of its geometrical shape, mechanical means being provided to effect the constriction and therefore the desired crimping. The dies are arranged to slide on guide members 7, 11, 9, 20, 8 between side plates 6 to provide the variable closed profile between their adjacent sides a. The workpiece to be crimped is received in an aperture 18 which is formed in the side plates 6 in alignment with the closed profile and has an entry channel 19. The die 4 is normally held in the fixed position as shown by means of a nose 21 on an arm 17 and the die 3 is held by a cam 16 on an arm 15 against the spring-urged dies 1, 2. In operation, the die 4 is first retracted by moving the arm 17 away from the arm 15, thus allowing a tension spring 25 to pull the die away from the entry channel 19. After insertion of the workpiece, the die 4 is returned ready for the crimping operation which is performed by movement of the arm 15 towards the arm 17. When crimping, the die 3 is forced inwardly on to the workpiece and at the same time coacts with the die 1, forcing it up the incline 13 and on to the workpiece. After completion of a crimping operation, springs 10 assist in opening out the profile by sliding the dies along the guide members. Pre-setting means to suit the size of sleeve employed may comprise flat packing pieces 3a as shown, or an adjustable pivot-pin 16 for the arm 15. The dies may also be hydraulically-operated and, if desired, the sides of the polygonal workreceiving profile may be in the form of arcs.
