Abstract

979,303. Granulating. GES. FUR TEERVERWERTUNG m.b.H. June 14, 1961 [April 28, 1961], No. 21535/61. Heading B5A. Granulation of meltable substances, e.g. pitch, natural and synthetic resins, and thermoplastic materials, is effected by passing a stream of the melted material through a coolant whose temperature is above the melting point of the material at the point of entry, progressively cooling the material to solidify it and applying oscillations to the stream before solidification to break it into drops. The oscillations may be effected using an oscillation generator 20, or the feed device may be rythmically shaken or subjected to a beating action, or pressure fluctuations may be produced at regular intervals in the stream. As shown, molten material is fed through a pipe 21 to a nozzle chamber 12 closing the upper end of a coolant chamber 11 and furnished with nozzles 25 which direct streams of material through a coolant introduced by a pump through pipe 24 and discharged through pipe 26, the coolant adjacent the nozzles being preheated by a temporary operating heating coil 22. The granules collect in cone 13 and are discharged periodically by operation of valves 14, 16 through a coolant filled lock chamber 15 to a conveyer 17, the chamber 15 being fed with coolant through pipe 18 and vented through pipe 19. The temperature of the granules in the cone 13 depends on that of the coolant entering through the pipe 24, normally higher than room temperature. Evaporation of the coolant is avoided by working under superatmospheric pressure and this pressure can be chosen so that a cushion of vapour is formed below the nozzles 25 and the coolant extracted through the pipe 26 in vapour form. Agents may be added to the coolant to lower the boundary surface tension. The material and coolant may either flow in the same or opposite directions and either vertically upwards or downwards. Specification 282,994 is referred to.
