Abstract

979,262. Cooling system for semi-conductor rectifiers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 19, 1963 [July 24, 1962], No. 28422/62. Heading F4U. [Also in Division H1] A heat sink for a plurality of semi - conductor rectifiers comprises a container housing a closed circuit in which fluid can circulate, the container having a wall portion in contact with part of the length of the closed circuit which is adapted to carry the rectifiers externally of the container, and a part of the closed circuit not in contact with the wall portion having cooling means associated therewith, the arrangement being such that when the rectifiers are in an operating condition, fluid is circulated in the closed circuit by a thermosyphon action. In the Figure, semi-conductor rectifiers 3 are mounted on one side of a ribbed metal cooling member 1, from the other side of which extend ribs 2. The member constitutes an electrical supply bus-bar for the rectifiers 3, an end portion being connected to an electrical supply. Strips 6 and 8 are welded to the outer ribs 2 to form two ducts 7 and 9. An air duct 10 within a pipe 11 runs along duct 9 whilst the ribs project into duct 7. The strip 6 does not extend the full length of the ducts which have their ends interconnected. A fluid is heated by the ribs in duct 7 and is cooled in duct 9 by air which surrounds said duct and by air within the tube 11. Fixing lugs 15 permit the mounting of the sink on a supporting structure. A radiator may be placed in the fluid circuit such as in one of the connections between ducts, to replace the air duct 10 and permit cooling of the fluid. The rectifiers will all be at the same potential, and if a number of groups of rectifiers are arranged in bridge or like connections, the sink units will have to be insulated from each other and from earth.
