Abstract

Oxidation catalysts are made by impregnating supports having a surface area above 100 sq.m./gm. with a solution of a copper salt and a manganese salt and an organic complexing agent in amounts such that the final catalyst contains 2-20% CuO, 2-30% MnO2 and 1-10% of organic complexing agent, and heating the impregnated support until an active catalyst is formed. Examples of organic complexing agents are hydroxy acids, polyhydroxy acids, alcohols and polyalcohols. In lieu of an organic complexing agent (NH4)2(CO3 may be used. The support may be Al2O3, SiO2/Al2O3, SiO2/MgO, ZrO2, Al2O3/ZrO2, ZrO2/MgO or an acid treated clay; a - and g -aluminas are especially suitable. Additionally the support may contain 0,001-0,5% Pd. Heating usually involves drying at 49-127 DEG C. for 4-48 hours in air or steam and calcining at 540-760 DEG C. for 1-16 hours. Comparative examples are given.
