Abstract

Oxidation catalysts are made by mixing a support having a surface area of at least 100 sq.m./gm. with a cuprous salt, and optionally also a cupric salt, in the dry state, impregnating the mixture with a solution of a Pd salt and then heating the impregnated mixture until substantially all the copper salt has been converted to CuO and substantially all the Pd salt has been converted to metallic Pd, the amounts of Pd salt, cuprous salt and any cupric salt being such that the catalyst obtained contains 5-30% CuO and 0,0025-0,4% Pd. Specified supports are Al2O3.H2O, SiO2-Al2O3, g -Al2O3, ZrO2-Al2O3 and SiO2MgO. Examples are given.
