Abstract

979,117. Electrolytic testing apparatus. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Nov. 6, 1962 [Dec. 13, 1961], No. 41868/62. Heading G1N. In a polarographic cell having a base 40 carrying a pair of spaced electrodes 41, 43 which are bridged by an electrolyte within a membrane 20 of a polymer of fluorinated alkane permeable to a predetermined constituent such as oxygen, a desired spacial relationship between the base surface and the membrane is maintained by a second overlying membrane 19 which is relatively more permeable for said constituent, and is elastomeric. The second membrane may be of siliconi rubber. The cell is shown as an insert in a container 12 and the base structure 40 carrying the electrodes is supported in a stainless steel body 10. The electrode 41 is of noble metal and is flush with the bottom of the base structure, and electrode 43 is of silver wire coated with a layer of silver chloride. Passages 25 may be provided in body 10 for the removal of excess electrolyte and an O ring 27 may be provided to improve the dimensional stability.
