Abstract

979,081. Parametric amplifiers. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1962 [May 30, 1962], No. 20835/62. Heading H3B. In a frequency or phase modulated amplifier arrangement, including a degerate parametric amplifier P and a coupler C having at least three parts, the pump frequency is modulated by signals derived by demodulating the output from the amplifier arrangement, so that modulation of the idler frequency due to modulation of the pump frequency substantially cancels out that caused by modulation of the incoming carrier. Frequency or phase modulated signals #sŒ## are applied to port C1 of circulator C (e.g. a strip-line ferrite circulator). The output from port C3 is mixed with the output from a local oscillator 3, amplified and demodulated to give a " baseband " signal. Part of this output is used to modulate the output from pump frequency oscillator P1, e.g. by means of a reactance valve. The modulated pump output is applied through filter P2 to varactor P3 (e.g. a diffused silicon diode), which is followed by a filter P4 for the signal and idler frequencies (# i =# s ). Coupler C may have four ports, one being connected to a non-reflecting load.
