979,057. Seaming non-metaliic sheet material. TECHNICAL WAXES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1962 [July 11, 1961], No. 25060/61. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] The meeting faces 3, 4 of cartons which faces have previously been coated or impregnated with thermoplastic material are sealed together by applying heat simultaneously to the two faces 3, 4 from a source operating between them (otherwise than as described in Specification 898,960) and, as soon as the coating is sufficiently plastic to adhere, removing the heating effect and bringing the faces 3, 4 into mutual contact under pressure. The thermoplastic coating or impregnant is preferably applied to the whole of the carton material. A filled carton is conveyed to a heating station at which the faces 3, 4 are heated by two flame jets 6, Fig. 2, of gas, oil or spirit issuing from a double orifice burner 7 ; by radiant heat reflected from an infra-red source on to the faces 3, 4 by a hollow block 10, Fig. 4, fed by hot oil or water through inlet and outlet pipes 11 or by reflection from an adjacent resistance heater. The carton then passes to a closing and pressing station at which rollers press the faces 3, 4 together. Cooling means, e.g. cool air jets or chilled pressure rollers, may be provided at or immediately beyond the closing station. The invention may also be applied to sealing a wrapper around an already closed carton.
