Abstract

978,428. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. May 24, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1960], No. 6518/60. Heading F2E. A spot type disc brake in which the drag applied to the pads by the disc when brought into engagement therewith is utilized to increase the pressure exerted on the disc by the pads, comprises a floating pad carrier 8 having a fixed pad of friction material 9 to engage one side of the brake disc 4, a pair of movable pads 10, 11 for engaging the other side of the brake disc such that when a fluid-pressure operated wheelbrake cylinder 21 is actuated between the movable brake pads to apply them to one surface of the brake disc and the reaction exerted on the pad carrier 8 causes the fixed pad to be applied to the other surface of the brake disc, the pad carrier 8 together with the pads, is dragged by the disc in the direction depending on the direction of rotation of the latter to cause one of the movable pads to be urged against one side of a fixed abutment means in the form of a bracket 5, and the other movable pad is urged by roller and inclined plane mechanism 20 into further engagement with the brake disc to produce a self-energizing effect. An alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 4 discloses a pad carrier 26 carried by a torque link 27 mounted about one end on pivotal mountings 28 attached to the stationary axle housing 29. Liquid under pressure acting in the wheel cylinders 55 (56, not shown) urges movable pads 36 (37, not shown) towards the brake disc 34 and the reaction exerted on the pad carrier 26 causes a fixed pad 35 to be applied to the other side of the brake disc. The movable pads are dragged by the disc in a direction depending on the direction of rotation of the latter, causing one of the movable pads to be urged against the appropriate side of a shoulder and cause the pads to be forced into further contact with the brake disc by the camming action set up by co-operating inclined surfaces 53 and interposed rollers 54 to provide a self-energizing effect. The brake in each case may be released by springs (not shown). Adjustment to compensate for wear of the friction pads is effected by moving slippers 17 relative to the carrier 8 by the adjusting screws 19 (Fig. 2).
