Abstract

992,058. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1961 [Oct. 19, 1960], No. 35786/60. Heading F2E. A disc brake comprises a disc 1, a pad 5 of friction material pivotally associated with a pressure member 7 and directly bearing on a bracket 2 which is adapted to take the braking torque when the brake is applied and the disc is rotating in its normal direction, and means for angularly moving the pressure member 7 and so applying the brake. As shown two substantially rectangular friction pads 5 are each secured to one limb 6a of a T-shaped carrier 6, the other limb 6b of which is secured to a pressure member 7 by a bolt 8b, the hole 9 through the carrier for the bolt being oversize to enable the carrier to move angularly. For normal applications of the brake the braking torque is taken directly on the bearing surfaces 12 of the bracket. If necessary a light strap which engages the side of the pad or carrier opposite the bearing surface 12 may be provided to prevent excessive angularly movement of the pads when the brake is applied with the disc rotating in the opposite direction. The brake is applied by angular movement of the members 7 the projections 11 of which bear on the carrier 6. A cranked lever 14 is pivoted at one end of one of the members 7 and has its apex 15 connected to the other member 7 by a tension member 22. The other limb 16 of the lever 14 is provided with a cam surface 17 with which co-operates a cam follower 18 that is located on the end of a link 19 pivoted to the first member 7 and secured to the end of a cable 20, tensioning of which applies the brake. A piston and cylinder or like fluid-pressure mechanism may alternatively be provided to move the members 7 towards one another. The ends of the members 7 remote from the brake applying means may be interconnected by means which automatically compensate for wear and also retract them from the disc 1 after each braking operation. Specification 709,305 is referred to.
