Abstract
The invention relates to penicillins of general formula <FORM:0978178/C1/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, e.g. 6-(p-hydroxy-a -aminophenylacetamido)-penicillanic acid. Specified salts are the sodium, potassium, calcium, aluminium, ammonium, trialkylamine, procaine, dibenzylamine, l-ephenamine, N,N1-dibenzyl ethylene diamine, dehydroabietylamine, N,N1-bis-dehydroabi etylethylene diamine and N-benzyl -beta-phenethylamine. The penicillins are prepared by reacting 6-amino penicillanic acid, or a salt thereof, with a functional derivative of a carboxylic acid of formula <FORM:0978178/C1/2> where X is amino or a protected amino group which is subsequently converted to the amino group. Alternatively, a -bromo-hydroxybenzyl penicillin is first formed and then reacted with hexamethylenetetramine; or a -azido-hydroxy benzyl penicillin may be formed and then catalytically hydrogenated to the a -amino hydroxy benzyl penicillin. The penicillins may be used as nutritional supplements in animal feeds or as antibacterial agents for human and animal administration, e.g. mastitis in cattle.
