A device for connecting cable lugs, sleeves &c. to a conductor by notching wherein the punch is operated by an explosive charge and the back bearing is disposed in the stirrupshaped guide member of the device, said member being open on one side and having on the other side a comb extending over the stirrup web and along the longitudinal side of the stirrup characterized in that the guide member is provided with a displaceable hand guard and the opening situated in the member is adapted to be closed by the guard sleeve. The device comprises a comb 12 on which is mounted a guide member 1, a central member 2 in which the cartridge chamber is situated, a clamping head 3, trigger 4, percussion pin 5 and return spring 6. A punch 8 and notching tool 9 are mounted on a pressure pin 7 and co-operate with a fixed anvil 10 mounted on the member 1. A tubular guard sleeve 13 slidable in the longitudinal direction of the device has a projection 14 which engages the interrupted arm 1b of the guide member, and a recess 15 which permits the guard to close the opening 11 when the device is in its operative condition, i.e. when a conductor assembly is ready for notching. In a first modification the lower end of the arm 1b is coincident with the level of the pin 7 in its retracted position and the anvil 16 is positioned on an outwardly inclined face 17 of the member 1. The punch and anvil are recessed at 8a, 16a and the length of the projection 18 increased. In a second modification the projection 18 is removed and the guard formed with a chamfered portion so that when it is closed the opening 11 remains substantially open to facilitate insertion of various types of cable sleeves.
