977,999. Automatic exchange switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 4, 1962 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 46288/61. Heading H1L. [Also in Division H2] A switching matrix employs remanent magnetic relays including three sealed contact units each having two fixed magnetic contacts bridgable by an unsupported movable magnetic contact. The contacts are controlled by two, two-coil windings HR, HS and VR, VS on remanent cores separated by a permanent magnet and are retained in the condition to which they were last energized by remanent magnetism. The matrix comprises three vertical ordinates V1, V2, V3 and three horizontal ordinates H1, H2, H3, and at each of the nine cross-points (1)-(9) is a remanent relay. To operate crosspoint relay (1) a setting pulse is applied to each of leads VS1 and HS1 energizing windings V2 and HS of the relay. Apart from closing the contacts of cross-point relay (1) the pulses also energize windings VS of cross-point relays (4), (7) and HS of cross-point relays (2), (3) causing the bridging contacts to engage one of the fixed contacts. To prevent these relays being inadvertently closed when another crosspoint relay, say (5), is energized, resetting pulses are applied to the respective vertical and horizontal leads VR2 and HR2 to ensure that all the associated relays are fully open immediately prior to applying setting pulses to leads VS2 and HS2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 870,906 and 883,430.
