Abstract

977,885. Cutting apparatus. GUTTERIDGE, SAMPSON Ltd. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962], No. 46349/62. Heading B4B. Sheet cutting apparatus comprises a work platform 10 and a blade 15 which is mounted on a blade carrier 16 arranged for pivotal movement relatively to a cutting edge 11 and projects laterally therefrom towards the cutting edge of the work platform, the thickness of the blade in the plane of its cutting movement being less than its breadth. The cutting edge 11 of spring steel is screwed to a channel member 14, Fig. 2, and is inclined slightly to the vertical and the blade comprises a length of spring steel 15 mounted on a carrier 16 of inverted-U section. A sleeve 23 and spring 24, Fig. 3, form a pivot for the carrier 16, and adjustment of a nut 26 threaded on the spring urges the blade towards the platform with the desired tension. A nose 28 on a lug 29 at the pivoted end of the carrier 16 acts as a stop when the blade carrier is raised, and engages the corner 10a of the platform, limiting the upward pivotal movement of the carrier, a stop 30 limiting downward movement. The handle 31 is extensible to vary the leverage exerted. Part of the blade 15 adjacent the pivot is formed as a cam, coacting with the edge 11, and the cutting edge of the blade 15 extends at approximately 89 degrees relative to the pivot axis, so that the tension spring 24 urges the blade and carrier hard against the cutting edge 11. In a modification the blade carrier comprises a spine with a pocket at each end to receive the ends of a strip of spring steel, bowed to the extent desired for rigidity. The edge of the blade may be ground, the blade lying in a plane declining towards the work platform.
