Abstract

A process for glazing ceramic material comprises mixing an aqueous solution or colloidal dispersion of a protein with a glaze mix and thereafter increasing the electrolyte content of the glaze mix and/or adjusting the pH to obtain a desired viscosity suitable for application to the ceramic material. In a modification, the protein may be added to the mix in dry, powdered form. The protein may be added together with a vegetable gum. The protein is added in an amount of from 0.02 to 5% by weight based on the total weight of the glaze mix, and the vegetable gum, when added, is present in an amount up to ten times the weight of the protein. The protein may be selected from casein, albumen, animal glue, gelatine or ground nut protein; the vegetable gum from Karaya gum, gum arabic, gum tragacanth or guar gum. Several examples of mixes are given.
