Abstract
977,731. Welding by pressure. AMALGAMATED DENTAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 3, 1961 [Jan. 7, 1960], No. 674/60. Heading B3R. In welding hardenable stainless steel to cemented tungsten carbide or to austenitic stainless steel, a third metal, capable of wetting the hardenable stainless steel, is inserted between the components to be welded. The components are welded directly together without being bridged by a third metal as in brazing. A stem 3 of hardenable stainless steel (12-18% Cr, 0.1-0.8% C) is carried in a water-cooled copper electrode 1 and a sintered tungsten carbide cylinder (not shown), with 6-15% cobalt, of the same diameter is located in a nickel-chromium alloy collet 6 on a disc of platinum on a copper electrode 7. The upper electrode loaded by a weight 8 is lowered and a shim of 33% Cu-67% Ni alloy, larger in diameter than the stem, is placed between the stem and cylinder and a flux, e.g. a fluoride based flux incorporating nickel powder, is placed between the shim and the cylinder. A control apparatus causes preheating oxyacetylene flames to be applied to the work to preheat to 600‹ C and then the application of current to the electrodes to effect a resistance weld. The parts are then allowed to cool in the reducing flames. The tungsten carbide may be a dental bur tip welded to a stainless steel shank and tips may be welded simultaneously to both ends of a shank. Other metals for insertion between the parts are copper 50-80% nickel alloys; platinum; platinumrhodium alloy; pure iron; high speed steel; cobalt-tungsten-iron alloys; nickel; cobalt; copper; nickel-iron alloys and nickel-chromium alloys, some being in foil or powder form. The hardenable stainless steel may comprise 10-18% Cr and less than 1% Ni.
