Abstract

872,232. Welding by pressure; soldering. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE A.G. July 7, 1959 [July 23, 1958], No. 23291/59. Class 83 (4). In joining metal parts by spot-welding a mixture of a hard solder and finely-divided high melting point additives which have melting points above that of the hard solder and which are capable of alloying with the parts to be joined, is placed between the parts and a welding current is passed therethrough so that the hard solder melts and wets the surfaces of the parts before the welding temperature is reached and welding takes place. In spot-welding copper and 18/8 stainless steel parts a paste comprising a powdered hard solder (melting point about 700‹ C.) and powdered copper, nickel, manganese and silicon is applied between the parts and current is supplied to the welding electrodes to first melt the hard solder. The electrodes press the still solid higher melting point additives into the parts to form local resistance spots and current flow is continued to effect spot-welding. The higher melting point components may be alloys, metal salts or reducible metal oxides and the joining may take place in an inert gas or alternatively a. reducing agent may be included in the mixture. The mixture may be plated on one or both surfaces to be joined.
