Abstract
1,188,622. Welding by fusion or pressure. CARL CANZLER. 27 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967; 7 March, 1968], No. 25276/68. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A clad member, consisting of a base layer 1 and a cladding 2 containing at least 50% molybdenum is fusion welded to another member by welding the base layer 1 directly to the other member and welding the cladding 2 directly or indirectly to the other member. The members may be similar clad members having base layers of steel, alloy steels containing chromium and/or nickel, or nickel and nickel alloys, e.g. 26-30% Mo up to 0À05% C, up to 1% Si up to 1% Mn, 4-7% Fe up to 2À5% Co, 0À2-0À6% V, balance Ni explosive bonded to claddings of molybdenum alone or alloyed with 0À5% titanium and 0À1% zirconium or up to 50% rhenium. The cladding may be welded with a filler metal containing about 50% molybdenum and 50% rhenium. Argon mixed with 5-10% hydrogen may be used as an arc-shielding gas. The weld 7, Fig. 3, between the claddings 2 is separated from the weld between the base layers 1 by a strip 5 of molybdenum or molybdenum alloy or a laminate consisting of similar metals to those of the clad members. A molybdenum or molybdenum alloy strip 8 may be welded to the cladding 2 in which case the weld 7 may be dispensed with. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cladding edges are cut back from the edges 3 of the base layers 1 and are connected by a welded strip 9 spaced from the weld 6.
