Abstract
The invention comprises A-nor-B-homo- 10#x-19-nor-3, 6, 20-trione having the formula <FORM:0977483/C1/1> the enolic forms thereof, A-nor-B-homo-19-nor-pregn-5(10)-3, 6, 20-trione and processes for the preparation thereof in which 19-nor-pregn-5(10)-ene-3(20)-dione is reacted with ozone in an inert solvent medium to form 19-nor-5(10)-seco-pregna-3, 5, 10, 20-tetrone which is then treated with an acid cyclization agent to form A-nor-B-homo-19-nor-pregn-5(10)-ene-3, 6, 20-trione which compound is then reacted with a mixed metal hydride to yield A-nor-B-homo-10#x-19-nor-pregna-3, 6, 20-trione. Cyclization may be effected with formic acid. The 19-non-pregn-5(10)-en-3, 20-dione may be obtained by the oxidation of <FORM:0977483/C1/2> (where R represents an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms to form the corresponding 3-alkoxy-19-nor-pregna-2, 5(10)-dien-20-one which is then reacted with an acid agent to form 19-nor-pregn-5(10)-ene-3, 20-dione. Oxidation may be effected with aluminium isopropylate in the presence of methyl ethyl ketone. Pharmaceutical compositions having progestomimetic activity and containing compounds having the first of the above formulae are administered orally in tablets, glossets, pills, syrups or elixirs, by injection, or rectally as a suppository.
