A procedure for the preparation of henzodiazepine derivatives of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1 and R2 represent hydrogen or lower alkyl and R3 represents hydrogen or halogen whose process comprises a) hydrolyze a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before and R4 and R5 represent a fraction capable of being removed by hydrolyzation, or b) reacting a benzophenone of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1 and R3 have the same meaning as before, with an alpha-amino acid of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R2 has the same meaning as before, or a respective ester, or c) removing N-oxide from a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before, with a reducing agent, or d) dehydrating a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before, or e) converting a compound of the general formula in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before, and X represents arylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyloxy, alkylsulfonyl, alkylsulfonyloxy, lower alkanoyl or lower alkanoyloxy, in the corresponding 4,5-dehydro derivative, and f) isomerizing a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before, by basic treatment, or g) for the preparation of compounds of the formula I, wherein R2 is hydrogen, hydrolyze a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1 and R3 have the same meaning as before and R6 represents lower alkyl, under acidic conditions, h) reducing a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before, to effect conversion into the corresponding 4,5-dehydro derivative, or i) dehydrogenating or oxidizing a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before, in position 4,5, or j) oxidizing a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** in which R, R1, R2 and R3 have the same meaning as before and B represents carbonyl or methylene, or a respective 4,5-dihydro derivative.
