Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0977334/C1/1> (wherein R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R is alkyl of at most 4 carbon atoms, phenyl, halophenyl or nitrophenyl but is not alkyl if R1 is hydrogen, and X is chlorine or bromine) and their preparation either by halogenation with elementary halogen of the corresponding 5-unsubstituted 8-acyloxy-quinolines and quinaldines or by esterification of the corresponding 5-halo-8-hydroxy-quinolines and quinaldines with a halide or anhydride (or a mixture of these) of the appropriate acid RCOOH. Examples are given. 8-Benzoyloxyquinaldine is prepared from 8-hydroxyquinaldine and benzoyl chloride in presence of pyridine. 8-p-chlorobenzoyloxy-quinaldine and 8-p-nitrobenzoxyquinaldine are prepared similarly. The substituted quinolines of the invention, which are stated to be germicides, may be mixed with an inert carrier to form pharmaceutical compositions.
