977,215. Supporting lamps. MOLERICHARDSON (ENGLAND) Ltd. Oct.22, 1963 [Nov. 8, 1962], No. 42219/62. Heading F4R. [Also in Division B8] A lamp-supporting carriage especially for use in film and television studios, comprises a body carried on wheels running on parallel rails above the area to be lighted, an electric motor connected to at least one of the wheels for driving the carriage along the rails and a winch driven by an electric motor for winding a cable to adjust the height of a lamp carried by the cable. In the form shown, the body 1, Fig. 1, is U-shaped and is mounted on wheels 2 running on rails 8 and driven by an electric motor 3. Switches 6 on the ends of the body cut out the motor on coming into contact with buffers at the ends of the rails. A frame 11 is supported on pillars 12 on the body 1 and carries a winch 13 driven by an electric motor 14. The cables 20 from the winch are connected to the opposite ends of a rod 21 to which the lamp support 22a is pivoted. A telescopic mounting for the lamp consisting of vertical rods 17a-17e, 18a-18e and horizontal strips 19a-19j forming a series of mutually slidable frames is suspended from the frame 11, the uppermost strip 19a carrying a sleeve 23 which operates a switch 24 to cut out the motor 14 when the frames reach the upper end of their travel. A pair of rollers 26, Fig. 3, bear on the cables 20 so that slackening of the cable, e.g. on encountering a piece of scenery, closes a switch 29 to cut out the motor 14. In a modification, the spacing between the rails 8 and frame 11 is increased so that the lower strips of the frames are accommodated between the rails 8 at the upper end of their travel.
