Abstract

977,203. Brake transmitting mechanisms. H. O. SCHROTER. March 30, 1962 [April 1, 1961], No. 12376/62. Heading F2E. A brake linkage includes a lever 26 arranged to provide a substantial increase in the velocity ratio of the linkage during the brake application stroke, a spring 31 connected to the lever 26 and through which the brake actuating force is initially transmitted, and a catch mechanism, e.g. a ratchet mechanism 40, 41 arranged to become engaged at a predetermined stage of the application stroke and when so engaged to prevent the spring being further stressed and to transmit further actuating force positively to the output member of the linkage. As shown, the lever 26 has rigidly secured thereto for rotation therewith a radius arm 38 which is pivotally connected to a connecting rod 15 in turn pivotally connected to an input lever 10. The spring 31 is retained between a washer 32 held by a nut 33 on a bolt 30 which is pivotally secured to one arm of the lever 26 and a lug 34 formed on a lever 24 pivoted at 25 on the other arm of the lever 26. A chain linkage 22 pivotally connects the lever 24 to the output T-piece 16. Movement of the lever 10 by an associated brake lever or pedal causes the lever 26 to pivot with a much greater angular velocity which pivotal movement is transmitted via the bolt 30, spring 31, lever 24 and chain linkage 22 to the output piece 16 to take up slack in the brakes. Further movement of the lever 10 causes the spring to be compressed introducing lost motion between the levers 26, 24 and applying increased thrust to the brakes. Before the spring becomes completely compressed the pawl 41 engages the teeth 40 on the lever 26 which prevents further compression of the spring 31 and allows further movement of the lever 10 to be transmitted directly to the chain linkage 22.
