[Also in Division B1] An apparatus for providing contact between two fluids, e.g. air and water in a cooling tower, comprises a plurality of superimposed layers A, B of cellular structures, each layer being formed of a plurality of contacting partitions 12 ... 15 defining the walls of passages 10, 11 through the layers, the passages being polygonal in cross-section, transverse to the layers, and offset, preferably angularly, relative to the passages in an adjacent layer, whereby any passage in a layer overlies a plurality of layers in the adjacent lower layer. The material of the layers may be absorbent or hydrophilic, e.g. it may be a paper-like material impregnated with phenol formaldehyde to which is added wetting agents, fungicides, or flame retardents. The lowest layer B may have a non-wettable surface.
