Abstract
977,152. Converting. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1960], No. 46/60. Heading H2F. Apparatus for the detection of firethrough in a mercury arc converter when using a broad pulse system comprises a first circuit 21, 22 which generates a signal in delayed response to a control grid pulse, the time delay being in excess of the commutation period of the valve V, a second circuit 20 sensitive to fractionally excessive anode or cathode current, a detector 24 sensitive to the simultaneous occurrence of both the delayed signal and the signal indicating excessive current and relay means for controlling an indicator or protective device in response to the output from the detector. In the arrangement shown, excessive current through the resistor 15 switches off the normally conducting PNP transistor 50. Similarly transistor 31 which also forms part of the misfire detection apparatus is switched off by a grid pulse. The negative output thus produced by transistor 31 is fed to the base of transistor 44 which in conjunction with capacitor 45 extends the pulse duration. The extended pulse is applied to transistor 47 which is switched on and thus prevents a signal from transistor 50 (which if not prevented would indicate firethrough) from reaching the transistor 41. Misfire is detected by circuits 21, 27 and 30 as described in Specification 977,151.
