Abstract
977,151. Converting. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1960], No. 45/60. Heading H2F. Apparatus for the detection of misfire in a mercury arc converter comprises a first circuit 22 responsive to an increase in magnitude of the anode to cathode voltage of the valve V relative to the normal, a second circuit 21 responsive to a more positive than normal grid firing voltage, detection means 23 responsive to the simultaneous occurrence of both abnormal voltages and a time delay relay 24 operated by the detector signal for controlling an indicator or protective device when the abnormal operating conditions are sustained for a period in excess of the normal firing delay of the valve V. In the arrangement shown, the first and second circuits 22, 21 each comprising a grounded emitter PNP transistor which is normally conducting and which are switched off when the respective abnormal voltages are present in the valve V. The detector 23 comprises a rectifier 30 which passes an input to the delay relay 24 when both transistors are switched off. The PNP transistor 31 conducts when the input signal is received, the delay being obtained by the capacitor 33. The circuit 24 may operate an electromagnetic counter or a bi-stable circuit requiring manual reset. The device is suitable for detecting true misfire in converters operating on either a broad or narrow pulse system. Specification 977,152 is referred to.
