[Also in Division H3] An impedance bridge which is excited from an A.C. source 28 includes in one of its legs a device 22 such as a liquid quantity guage which has a varying capacitive reactance which may unbalance the bridge; the unbalance output of the bridge is amplified (in the amplifier 40) and rectified (in the rectifier 42) and coupled back to a semiconductor diode 12 included in a second leg of the bridge, in such a way that the capacitance of this diode alters so as to automatically rebalance the bridge. The diode 12 is operated below its conduction level. An output may be obtained from the bridge by using the rectified unbalance voltage to control a Pierce type oscillator 14 which includes a transistor 16 and a crystal 50. The varying unbalance voltage from the bridge acts so as to alter the collector-base capacitance of the transistor 16 and thus the output frequency of the oscillator, which is measured at the terminals XX. Changes in frequency are thus representative of changes in liquid quantity in the vessel 24.
