Abstract
An imide of formula <FORM:0976976/C3/1> where R is H, a monovalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon is polymerized with another ethylenically unsaturated monomer in solution in a C1-4 aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a free radical catalyst. The imide may be maleimide or its N-alkyl, N-cycloalkyl, N-aralkyl or N-aryl derivatives (a number are specified, including N-phenyl maleimide) and the other monomer may be isobutene, styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl isobutyl ether or ethyl acrylate which are exemplified and amongst those specified are unsaturated hydrocarbons, unsaturated esters of aliphatic acids, aliphatic esters of unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, unsaturated ethers, anhydrides of unsaturated acids, nitriles of unsaturated hydrocarbons and dienes. The solvent alcohol may be methanol or ethanol and may be used in up to 1,000% concentration. Polymerization may be at above 0 DEG C. using as catalyst peroxides or an azo compound e.g. azo-di-isobutyronitrile. The polymers may be fabricated into articles e.g. films.
